Free Falling

I stand on the edge of something new
And I’m scared as hell
I look out at the endless horizon
And refuse to let my eyes drift downward
Don’t want to see where I crash to if I fall
I don’t want to see the broken bodies
Of those who leapt before me
Without trust and acceptance
Who faltered, fell, and lay bleeding
Panicky I take a deep breath
Searching for the place that fear turns
To the endorphin high of chances taken
That beautiful place between fear and triumph
I release the air in my lungs slowly
And shake my head to clear it
I know what I have to do
There is only one way to live this life
And that is with an open heart and no fear
Life doesn’t slow for the timid
It doesn’t bend to the bruised
I spread my arms wide
My bare toes gripping the edge
The wind teases my hair as I lift my face
I scatter my doubts to the wind
Then in one sweet moment I jump

Sometimes you see an image that sparks something in you. So it was with this particular picture. I saw it and saved it to my “writing prompt picture” file. The other day I went looking there for inspiration and this one stood out to me again. I love how trusting, how free, how passionate she looks. I found the picture through a Google image search but have linked it to the artists site that I found (some of her other photo manipulations are really stunning).

  10. Very nicely done.
You’re a poet and we know it.

  11. Very nice poem. Not a position you’d ever see me in, unless chocolate pudding awaited below. The jump or the metaphor.

  12. Love it such a lovely poem

  13. The Frisky Virgin

Beautiful poem. And the picture is stunning–you can feel the emotion from it, just like from your poem. *Hugs*

  14. That picture is captivating and putting those words to it was perfect. Love it. Seriously.

  15. This is a wonderful poem, and I’m glad to see someone else does this. I have a whole collection of pictures that just ‘struck me’ for whatever reason, and they inspire me to write.

Also, on a lighter note, if you want my brother-in-law, you’re welcome to try, but I warn you this: he’s over 300 lbs, he doesn’t cut his hair/beard, he only showers once every week or 2, and he’s basically a big man child. He talks and sounds exactly like Michael Jackson. If you can stomach that… you’re welcome to try. It’s better than the big-breasted bimbos that swear they like him for him and then just steal all of his money.

    • Wow…where to start. First I’m thrilled I’m not the only one who does this and thanks for the kind words about this post. Now…onto this brother-in-law. Wow…just wow. Luckily I am not the kind of woman to hitch up with a man for money but ewwww. Just ewww. Sounds like he needs a good kick in the ass. What the hell is wrong with people!?

  16. A stunning photo and a beautiful poem.
    You are so talented.

I have started keeping photos that inspire me, but then get very frustrated when I cant reproduce them in paint

    • Aww thank you. I can’t imagine the frustration of taking a picture you already like and trying to recreate it…I only have to put words to it. I imagine that would be difficult…then again you are talented, my friend. :)

  17. That is a gorgeous pic!!

You know me and all of my jazz about jumping and falling and shit, so how could I know love this poem?!
