Whale Watching

“Please go away and let me sleep for the LOVE OF GOD!” blares at me and I fumble for my phone to stop Chris Farley’s voice from yelling at me. Miller wakes laughing, as he has the whole trip, at my Tommy Boy alarm clock. I kick his mattress a little then leave him to dose while I jump in the shower. I dress comfortably in jeans and a tank top with a grey lightweight shirt over. I don’t bother much with my hair since I know it will be wind ravaged by the end of the day. I do, however, make sure to sunscreen the crap out of myself. No way am I letting myself fry while out on the open ocean for 3+ hours.

In the time it takes me to do my hair, sunscreen, and pull on sneakers Miller is showered and rushing me out the door. We stopped briefly to extend our stay two more nights and then made our way to Dunkin Donuts before heading into Boston. Have I mentioned ever how much I loathe coffee? Well, I do, and I am not a fan on Dunkin Donuts either. I go get an apple fritter though so I have something in my belly prior to taking my Dramamine.

some crazy cool ship we passed

We drive into Boston, I snap pictures along the way, and then we are parking at the marina. We get our ticket for the excursion, I swallow my pill and encourage Miller to as well just in case. We walk the gangplank onto the ship, boat, whatever it is, and go straight up to the top “observation” deck. There are no seats, just room to stand and we decide to hang up there until we reach the whales so we have prime real estate when everyone comes up to view them. The journey out of the marina is great, fantastic shots of the city, and a leisurely speed.

my hair got OWNED by the wind!

Then the bitch opens up and we start riding the ocean like it’s our own personal mechanical bull. Miller, as large as he is, goes air born a couple times as we crest then dip over the waves and I think I laughed the whole way out. Also, the salt air sinus douching really cleared up my allergies, which was awesome. It was about an hour of screaming over the roar of the wind and laughing when people let go of the rails to walk around before we got out to the whales. Also on the top deck was a full out adventurer. I saw him and immediately created a story in my head. He had one of those awesome adventurer walking sticks, official shoes, backpack, and was even missing most of all his fingers. In my head he totally got caught in an avalanche and had to eat a friend…just saying…dude was bad ass!

basking shark Whale Watching

Yeah...saw one of these guys! *Not my picture*

We got lucky and saw a huge basking shark (picture sucked but it was REALLY cool), you know one of those toothless huge ones. It looked positively pre-historic, which I guess it kind of is. It was pretty cool seeing it though since they are the fifth most endangered shark species. Then we saw a whale, I forget which kind, but it was too far away to get pictures of really. Then for most of the stay out at sea we followed around a Mom and baby Humpback whale. The baby put on a show, diving down and breaching a couple times, which was really amazing to see.

I love the mist they huff out.

Anyone who has been whale watching knows when they go under you have NO idea where they are going to surface. Since the ocean is, uh, BIG, the chances of getting great shots is pretty slim…at least that is what I told myself because my pictures sucked. Luckily the experience was still pretty amazing. When we were headed back into the marina we went below for a beer and so Miller could sleep off the effects of the Dramamine which apparently made him really sleepy. I snuck in some blog reading on my phone and a bit of writing.

building Miller said looked like a bong...it's super odd but cool.

view from lunch

When we docked we decided to walk around and enjoy Boston a bit since we had to pay the $40 parking regardless of how long we stuck around. We strolled through the financial district and even though Miller thinks guys in suits look like “tools” I enjoyed the view! We walked across the bridge and found a couple landmarks from our Roadside America app and then decided to head towards a waterfront casual looking place to eat. The Barking Crab was not cheap but it was amazing! We treated ourselves to a nice lunch before we walked our way back to the car and made our way to the hotel.

*There is more from this night that includes a celebrity…and the next day…Fenway! Be sure to come back!*

  1. “Whale butt”. LOL!!

  2. I think the “cool picture” may be Boston Public Library? If so, it’s way cooler inside. The third floor is where all the old maps used to be, it looks like the old library from Ghost Busters.

    And I’m convinced it’s haunted.

    That is all.

    • Well now I’m bummed I didn’t force Miller to go over there…had I gotten him into a library he’d have been miserable and I’d have been in heaven.

  3. What a bloody awesome day, I love the milk bottle building very cool, yeah I think it would be difficult to get cool pictures of whales…….but you at least got to see them which is more then I have ever been able to do……..

    • It was honestly my favorite day of the trip…well maybe…Thursday was pretty awesome. I hadn’t ever been whale watching before and LOVED every second of it.

  4. “salt air sinus douching” LMAO!!

Oh and that pic of your and your hair . . . OMG. Your hair looks slightly possessed! hahahaha!

    • uh yeah, the hair was wrecked for the rest of the day! An hour out to sea with salt air whipping at you will do that to curly frizzy hair. It was NOT pretty.

  5. I’m determined to go whale watching some day! It’s one of my life ambitions :)

How are men who wear suits tools though? Men wearing suits are quite sexy!

    • Apparently Miller thinks that they are “corporate souless suckers” but then again he is an artist so anyone who is forced to wear a suit everyday looks like they are dead inside. I think it’s damn sexy. lol

  6. The pictures may not be what you want, but the experience was I’m sure. Love the post. Boston looks pretty cool, though I doubt I will ever make it that far up. Love the photos of the city! :)

    • Very true. I was fine with the photos but Miller kept yelling that I sucked at them. Then again when I gave him the camera he did a shit job. Serves him right for getting yelly with me. So glad that you could enjoy the city via my photos.

  7. Dude that old ship is pretty awesome. It kinda looked pirate-y and I’m surprised you didn’t sneak the word “booty” in there somewhere.

And ooh eeee a celebrity sighting???

    • It is pretty awesome. I have a picture of Miller pointing to a DP sign (inside double penatr…well you get the idea…joke) but I didn’t think it would translate well. That’s about as close to “booty” jokes as we got. Yup…stay tuned…full blown celeb siting in freaking Danvers, Mass.

  8. Looks like a lot of fun! You didn’t happen to assassinate Tom Brady by any chance did you? That would be really cool if you did!

    • I did not assassinate anyone, sorry. Had I know that would have been rewarded (preferably monetarily) I would have considered it though. I have pretty loose morals when it comes to offing annoying people.

  9. Looks like a wonderful trip! However, I’m not getting in the water with something big enough to turn my boat over. How does the ship’s captain know how close he/she can get?

    Great photos.

    • Haha. I don’t know how they know since it came up and surfaced after the boat was kinda sorta stopped to see the other whales. It was one of those “OH, shit, a basking shark” kinda thing. I didn’t consider that…then again we were on a HUGE boat. I love the photos though so I’m glad you enjoyed them.

  10. Most of my whale pictures look like your last one too. My pictures, as you said, “sucked”, as well. Still, it was cool to know that it was a whale even if I only got a small portion.
